Twinning roots are to be found at the end of the Second World War when many communities overcame their former hostility by linking together. Twinning fosters friendship and international co-operation at a local level and is an important building block to better understanding of the aspirations of the European Union.

Leek is twinned with Este near Padua. Both towns are the same size and linked formally in 2002. Over the last few years many citizens from both towns have visited each other and formed lasting friendships. Young people have played football and basketball at Este’s annual Atestiadi or sports festival. Links have been established between some schools which has resulted in visits. Our musicians have played and sung at Este’s Euro Festival. Leek has received visits from Este’s Gospel Choir and their Down choir and Este has joined in Leek’s Christmas Lights “switch on”. URA has actively promoted the link via Italian classes and the walking group and Rotary have made links.

Este is a beautiful town with a castle, a museum of international significance, a villa where Shelley and Byron stayed and with a park and clock tower like Leek!

The Leek Twinning Committee meet on the second Tuesday each month, excluding August and December, and welcomes those with an international outlook and who want to help foster this link between our two communities. We always meet in the Leek Town Clerk’s Office in Stockwell Street. If you are interested do contact either the Chairman Helen Ratcliffe on 01538 360837 or the Vice Chairman Paul Baxter on 01538 382913.
